    Introduction to Engineering

Condé Nast has changed rapidly over the past few years, particularly in the way we develop software and solve problems in collaboration with colleagues around the world. While the fundamental challenges of getting content online may seem trivial, on a global scale and in the legacy of an organization that is over a century old, it takes a lot of effort.

Two global engineering teams help facilitate that change. Product Engineering is responsible for the implementation of Condé Nast’s digital products and is organized by capability along with several supporting functions, while the Platform Engineering Team is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the core Platform that our Digital Products are built upon.

    Engineering Team Work2

    Some of our responsibilities:

    • Building brand-specific websites and apps across global markets
    • Creating the tools and systems that allow Content to be created, distributed, and displayed to customers
    • Creating tools and systems that allow us to generate revenue around our Content
    • Building dedicated commerce capabilities across affiliate commerce and unified shop

    What do engineers do?

Both the Product and Platform Engineering Teams build the foundations for our web-based products and internal tools. By prioritizing business needs through targeted development, these teams enhance our offerings and help scale progress across products and domains. As a team, we pride ourselves on our high standards and performance. Our collaborative culture of open questions, discussions, and accountability supports those efforts. We also believe in fixing problems when we see them, even if they’re not ours, and owning our impact.

    Core principles

These guiding principles were outlined during July 2022’s Lookback/Lookforward.

    1. Performance and scaling - we focus on scaling our capabilities to be global and highly performant.
    2. Consistency, availability and resiliency - we build a reliable app.
    3. Security & compliance experience - we plan for security and compliance first.
    4. Run your app anywhere - meet your customers where they are in our three regions for deployment (NA, EMEA and APAC).
    5. Be lean - stay cost-conscious.
    6. Continuous learning - enable empathy and collaboration with each other.

Design system tools and plugins - An overview of the various design and developer tools we use.
